Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or perhaps a mountain, you will have heard something of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit. Now, you can live out your own middle earth fantasies in your very own hobbit hut rental.
You needn’t travel all the way to New Zealand – the movie’s breath taking backdrop – either. In the heart of the Luxulyan Valley in Cornwall, the hobbit hideaways at Acorn Camping and Glamping are nestled into the thriving woodland setting that is comparable to some of the picturesque forest scenes from the movies. It’s scenery in which you could imagine elves and other mythical creatures rustling through the underbrush or leaping through the canopies. There is even a communal fire pit on site where you can gather round with other temporary woods-folk and tell tales of your daily adventures.
There are many adventures to be had in this corner of Cornwall, near the Eden project, that boasts seven acres of beautiful broadleaf woodland. As you can expect, with the Eden project as your neighbour, biodiversity is profusely promoted in the area, meaning rare animals and plants are in abundance. From frogs to fungi, trees to tadpoles, life, in all senses of the word, is rife in the forestry; you can explore via walkways that ensure the diverse habitats remain as nature intended and protect the resident wildlife.
The family-run campsite hosts a number of exciting activities that you may not usually come across during day-to-day life, giving you the opportunity to try something different. You can spend one day exploring the rugged and, in some places, otherwise inaccessible coastline and beaches aboard a kayak rental, the next learning how to sculpt your own unique piece of artwork, and the next on a romantic couples promenade. There is also plenty to entertain kids, with storytelling, scavenger hunts, den making, fire building, art games and bug hotels, you may find yourself getting a little jealous, but you needn’t worry, the circus skills workshop is open to all.
Imagine, after an action packed day, retreating to your warm, cosy hobbit hut, that is likely to be unlike anywhere you’ve stayed before. It is glamping in the sense that you’re provided with a hobbit’s comforts of home: a warm fire, kitchen utensils and accessories, a covered outdoor kitchen, a bathroom with a warm shower, and a toilet. However, you do need to bring your own wilderness survival essentials and your sense of adventure, as there is no mains electricity or central heating. The huts sleep up to four, with a double futon and two ‘sitnsleeps’, so it’s enough to snuggle up and share some body heat during the night.
Essentials to pack:
- Sleeping bags/duvet
- Tea towels
- Toilet roll
- Small butane gas canisters (these are available to purchase onsite if needed)
So, whether you’re looking for something a little different to your traditional getaway, or you already have a love for the wilderness, escape into a hobbit hut in the Luxulyan Valley for an unforgettable retreat you will tell tales of for years to come.
